8th International Marianne Brandt Award 2022
The 8th International Marianne Brandt Award 2022 asks artists and designers how that which connects us with other living beings and habitats can be newly discovered and designed. We are looking for projects, images, and texts on cooperative, aesthetic, metaphorical, and poetic exchanging relationships with other organisms and natural existences.
Could a perspective in which humans see themselves less as a counterpart to other living beings and habitats, but rather pay attention to similarities, familiarities, and mutual dependencies help establish new cooperative natural relations? How could we conceive and design connecting processes, objects, and atmospheres in this sense? How can we talk, write and tell about our existential connections in poetic and creative ways?
In the 1920s the Chemnitz-born artist and Bauhaus designer Marianne Brandt had written poems, in which she discovered forms of nature that appear like poetic and constructive role models for her shiny and geometric metal designs of “tableware” and “lighting bodies”. The sea appeared as a “shimmering round” or the moon as a “sculptural sphere”. At the same time, she searched for analogies in natural phenomena for her sensations and moods. Brandt found resonance in “sheet lightning” or in “rippling waves”.
What are the approaches to nature that are relevant for artists and designers today? How can we foster, show or celebrate moments that connect us?
Benefit: A prize of €5,000, as well as three awards will be bestowed in all three categories. Special award donators will be published soon.
Deadline: 3. March 2022
Fee: € 30

Open call for “Sustainable Connections”
After two years of pandemic restrictions on cultural gatherings, how can we reconnect through culture in ways that are resilient, versatile and able to withstand the strain that is put on our connections to each other by forces outside our control? As we are pushed to be ever more creative and flexible to navigate the challenges of the contemporary social and material world, what links are worth keeping and which would we rather cut?
As part of our installation Sustainable Connections for the exhibition Blast Cries Laughter at Pragovka gallery, we would like to invite guests to contribute works, performances or interventions as part of an evolving, collective installation piece, and help us to build a place to meet and explore old and new ways to retouch, reconnect and even retreat when necessary. To find out more about our project, everybody is welcome to visit us at Korzo Pragovka (6.2.2022), where the project will be presented.
It does not have to be a detailed proposition, we are looking for ideas, scatches, collaboration and dialogue. There is financial and material support for the best chosen projects.
1. place 5000 kč
2. place 3000 kč
3. place 1500 kč
For the other selected projects we will assume a sustainable approach in partnership with Art re use.

The project Sustainable Connections is part of a larger section of projects under the title (Un)Sustainable Connections, which falls under the exhibition Hole in Stasis, consisting of several curatorial sections.
The aforementioned project by the artist duo Susanne Kass and Tomáš Roček is based on a gradually emerging installation that connects the past and the present through collaboration, determining the direction the work will take and how it will modify the space in which it is created.
The installation will be worked on primarily by its authors, but they will adapt their work during the project period (6 February - 17 March) to come into contact with gallery visitors and invited artists, who can participate in the work and use prepared materials or even what they bring themselves.
This live, processual installation will be conceived as a small room/studio inside the large room of Pragovka Gallery Rear. The participatory installation in this defined space will give space for five weeks to meet, workshop and build on the work of individual artists. On 17.3.2022 the work on the project will conclude and the results will be evaluated at Korz Pragovka II.

The Uncanny - Open Call
When the familiar becomes unfamiliar, we call it uncanny. That is to say, when something almost satisfies our brain’s search for human likeness, but falls short by a small margin, we experience a characteristic sense of unease at the sight of it. This is our understanding of what it is about realistic androids and almost-perfect-but-not-quite CGI that makes our skin crawl, and it stems from Freudian theory surrounding the German word “unheimlich.” Freud tells us that the unheimlich, or unhomely, is our experience when confronted with something that is like home to us, but is made wrong somehow. How do you incorporate the unheimlich, or uncanny, into your artwork? Does your work illicit a visceral reaction from the viewer, or traverse the boundary between perfect and imperfect human likeness? We want to see your most uncomfortably human and impalpably imperfect images.
Who is it for: Open to international artists age 18 years or older.
Media: Original 2D artworks created through the media of painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, assemblage, collage, mixed media.
Deadline: 1. December 2021
Entry fee: $20 entry fee used to support the exhibition, promotional materials, and scheduled programming.

The residency aims to support these writers to produce up to five responses during their residency, with workload adapted to support more ambitious activities within the project accordingly. It is aimed at writers who are seeking an opportunity to explore their experimental critical voices and have their practice engaged with across Jerwood Arts’ audience and extended networks.
There are two Jerwood Writer in Residence opportunities in 2022. Each residency is six months long and responds to two of three exhibitions.
Who is it for: Applicants must be living and working in the UK, be outside formal education at the time of application and throughout their chosen residency period and must be able to demonstrate at least one year's track record of professional writing practice but not yet be regularly contributing to established arts publications. Benefit: Writers will receive a £1,500 fee, a £300 mentoring budget and a £500 production budget. Writers may use the £1,500 fee to research towards their self-directed interests and the production budget to disseminate their thinking and research through means of an event, DIY publication, video recording, podcast or other activity.
